A Texas man claims he’s found the newest “recession indicator” at Nordstrom Rack. And no, it doesn’t have anything to do with shoe prices.
TikToker @itsnotskrillex posted a video that received more than 9,000 views. In it, he films what appears to be dust on a variety of shoes at Nordstrom Rack.
‘All of these shoes are covered’
In his video, the content creator discusses a peculiar sight. According to him, all of the shoes in the store had a layer of dust on them, a detail he confirmed in the comments section.
“ Yo, Nordstrom Rack, what the [expletive] is going on?” he asks. “Why are these shoes covered in [expletive] dust, bro? All of these shoes are covered in [expletive] dirt and dust … You’re gonna charge me $90 for shoes with dust?”
In his description, the content creator compared going to Nordstrom Rack to going to Ross, saying, “Literally going to Ross @Nordstrom Rack get bent.”
Commenters weigh in on the dusty shoes
In the comments section, multiple viewers said they were not surprised by the presence of dust on the shoes. A few commenters said the store had been going downhill for some time.
“Nordstrom is not what it used to be,” one viewer said.
Another commenter said, “Department stores are trash now.”
Are dusty Nordstrom Rack shoes a recession indicator?
The TikToker’s central claim—that dusty shoes might just be a recession indicator—could hold weight in certain circumstances. Shoe sales have been a longstanding “barometer of economic health,” according to Matt Priest, the President of Footwear Distributors and Retailers of America (FDRA). For many, the presence of a dusty shoe or two in a store is an indication that shoes aren’t selling. In certain circumstances, that might just be a sign of a worsening economic state because of a lack of spending.
In this circumstance, though, it’s unlikely the dusty shoes actually are a sign of economic downturn. For one, an individual retailer not moving inventory isn’t a recession indicator. A downturn in shoe sales by itself isn’t, either.
Shoe store retail sales are slightly lower than they were in Fall 2025, but retail sales were at a high in August 2026, per Advisor Perspectives. The publication states that “Inflation-adjusted (real) retail sales increased 1.2% month-over-month but rose 6.0% year-over-year in August.”
There’s also been some growth in sales of certain types of shoes, such as performance footwear, which indicates that people are still buying shoes.
Additionally, dusty shoes don’t necessarily indicate that the store TikToker visited isn’t moving inventory. There could’ve been a plausible explanation beyond a lack of sales to explain the grime. Construction, employee retention, and even the location could all explain the dust.

Did Nordstrom Rack respond?
Beyond shoe sales and “recession indicators,” dusty footwear isn’t a good look. However, Nordstrom Rack did respond to Itsnotsrillex’s video. The company’s TikTok account commented, “We appreciate you bringing this to our attention. Please feel free to send us a private message with the location. Thanks!”
The creator responded and said he would provide the location via a TikTok direct message. It’s unclear if he did, or if he reached a resolution with the company.
