Bonding with your seatmate is theoretically a real-life meet-cute. You’re hitting it for hours on end, and everything is peachy, so you make a move. When one woman shot her shot during a flight, it came crashing down.
How a flight went south
In a short clip, TikToker Erica (@erica_lovelyyy) shares how a romantic encounter on a flight fizzled out.
“Tell me why they sat me next to my exact type of man, spent 9 hours talking, and he didn’t tell me he’s married until I asked for his number,” she recalls in the text overlay.
She flips the script in the caption of how she would want a hypothetical spouse to mention her.
“I’d want my husband to bring me up in the first convo with a girl idk,” the content creator writes in the caption.
‘9 hours is too long not to bring her up’
Erica’s story amassed over 657,000 views and sparked a heated debate. Many argued over whether the man should’ve mentioned his marital status. Those who sided with Erica agreed with her and believed the man should’ve been upfront and honest from the get-go.
“You would know I was married within the first few min of a conversation,” one viewer commented.
“Nah I’m with you, queen. 9 hours is too long not to bring her up. He was enjoying the attention,” another echoed.
“No this is valid. I’d find it so weird that a dude couldn’t bring up one thing about his wife for 9 hours of [straight] talking? Like, oh yeah, my wife likes that too, like something?!” a third concurred.
However, others who defended men claimed there could’ve been reasons he didn’t mention his wife.
“Because he was having a conversation with a stranger and once [it] turned into more than that, he set a boundary,” one commenter remarked.
“Not everyone assumes a conversation with the opposite gender is for dating purposes btw,” a second suggested.
“Or he wasn’t married and just wasn’t into you by the end so that was his get out,” a third proposed.
Further down in the comments section, Erica provided more details about what led to the confession.
“During our conversation, I got up to go to the bathroom and he joked about coming too. It was a very flirty ride. Anyways this post was from a year ago. I really don’t care anymore,” she explained, adding, “There was no ring.”
Is this a red flag?
Every relationship is different, and what is acceptable depends on the couple. Some people may see flirting outside the relationship as harmless, while others consider it cheating. Although the act of flirting isn’t inherently bad, it’s the intentions behind it and what it could turn into that breaks established trust and can make it inappropriate.
Having casual or lighthearted banter with a stranger may be perfectly innocent. However, it can easily cross a fine line into infidelity if the attraction is reciprocal. When the returned suggestive or romantic language and gestures could hurt or mislead the recipient and affect your partner, Choose Therapy defines this as harmful flirting. The outlet noted that not disclosing your marriage status can be even more dangerous because it can give false impressions of being single, leaving room for misunderstanding and possibly broken boundaries.
