A woman claims that a mysterious liquid “injected” into a bag of chips she bought from Walmart sent her to the emergency room.
TikTok creator Raine Miracles (@rainemiracles) posted the video from her emergency room bed on Thursday.
“I’m currently in the emergency room right now because someone tampered with my food,” she says to start the video.
Did Someone ‘Inject’ Liquid Into a Bag of Chips at Walmart?
Miracles continues, “A bag of chips I bought from Walmart—you can clearly see a microscopic hole in the chips where a needle was injected. There was some sort of fluid in the bottom of the bag.”
Why did Miracles eat the suspicious chips?
“I didn’t realize it until I ate about half the bag,” she says. “I’ve been here for hours. They’re running all kinds of tests on me.”
She ends her video with a warning.
“Everybody just pay attention to your food,” she says. “Inspect it before you put it in your mouth. It’s sad we have to do this, but this is our reality. Everybody be safe.”
Should You Check Food Before Eating It These Days?
In the comments section of the video, viewers said this story triggered their already rampant anxiety about food recalls.
“Good, now I can’t eat chips,” joked one viewer. “Watch out, 2027. I’m going to be so fine!”
A second person wrote, “This is quite literally my biggest fear ever.”
“They should’ve been able to send the bag with the liquid to the department of health in your state so they can check it out,” a third person said. “I hope you were able to do that.”
However, several viewers said they are not convinced by the story. “I’m glad I don’t believe everything on social media,” one person wrote.
A second person said, “I don’t believe this is true.”
One person had a response for the skeptics. “Who is old enough to remember the 1982 Tylenol tragedy?”
Is It Possible Someone Tampered with a Bag of Walmart Chips?
According to OnSite Gas Systems, chip bags at the grocery store are pumped with nitrogen gas to keep them fresh until they are opened. You can see how a tiny hole in a bag could let that gas out and regular air in—which contains bacteria and other microorganisms that start the clock on spoilage.
This University of Nebraska-Lincoln Food blog on spoilage notes that microorganisms like bacteria, molds, and yeast generally flourish at room temperature and can make food taste, smell, and even feel weird.
So it’s possible that Miracles just bit into a chip that was soggy because the bag was compromised in transit and the chips simply went bad. However, there is also precedent for individuals tampering with grocery store products, like this 2021 story about a man in west London.
Additionally, United States consumers went through a series of food recalls this summer, which many are attributing to the Trump administration’s cuts to public health funding. Experts say those cuts have a trickle-down effect on the entire system, which is supposed to protect consumers from these issues.
Is There an Easy Explanation for This Chip Experience?
Miracles showed viewers the bag of Good Eat’n baked hot puffs in a follow-up video after leaving the hospital. In the comments section of that video, a person claiming to have previously worked in a chip factory said that the hole could’ve come from a standard quality control measure.
“Every hour we have to stab a bag to check the nitrogen level,” the person wrote. “And I’m 90% positive this is what the puncture hole is. It is supposed to be done in the lab and [the bags should be] tossed, but that doesn’t always happen.”
