A Houston woman is shocked to find a roach in her mac and cheese at a local restaurant, Katz’s Never Kloses. The video raised concerns about food safety among viewers.

On July 5, a customer (@naymula100) documented the incident in a TikTok that has amassed 262,000 views as of Friday.

“Is it legs on there?” one woman in the video initially asks.

What Exactly Did She Find In Her Mac And Cheese?

After taking a closer look, the woman in the video realized that it appeared to be a roach. “Oh, that is a roach,” she says. “Ain’t no way.”

Overwhelmingly, the video shocked viewers.

“And you ate half the bowl before noticing,” wrote one user.

“Did you call an attorney?” asked another. “That is a lawsuit.”

What Are The Legal Implications Of This Incident?

A roach allegedly found in a restaurant meal could create legal and regulatory problems. That being said, a single incident does not automatically mean a customer has a successful lawsuit.

If the diner became sick or suffered medical expenses, lost wages, or other documented damages, those records could become important in a potential food-safety claim. Even without an illness, the customer could report the incident to local health authorities, who can investigate whether the restaurant violated food-safety requirements.

In Houston, the Health Department handles food-establishment complaints and foodborne-illness reports. The city provides dedicated complaint options for restaurant food-safety concerns, including inspection-related complaints.

That means the alleged discovery could have consequences beyond an unhappy customer. Health officials could inspect the restaurant and determine whether there is evidence of an infestation or other sanitation problems.

How Serious Of A Food-Safety Concern Are Roaches?

Cockroaches are also a legitimate food-safety concern because they can carry and spread bacteria, pathogens, and other contaminants as they move through dirty environments. They commonly travel through garbage, drains, sewage areas and other places where harmful microorganisms can be present.

When they come into contact with food, food-contact surfaces or kitchen equipment, they can potentially transfer those contaminants. Cockroach droppings, saliva, shed skin and body parts can also contaminate indoor environments.

Restaurants typically prevent cockroaches through a combination of sanitation, pest control and building maintenance. Employees should clean food spills and crumbs quickly, remove garbage regularly and keep food stored in sealed, pest-resistant containers. Kitchens also need to stay dry because cockroaches can be attracted to moisture around sinks, drains and leaking pipes.

The incident also highlights why restaurants need consistent pest-control and sanitation procedures. Food businesses have to protect prepared food from contamination and address potential pest problems before they reach customers.
