Texas Roadhouse’s bread rolls are a fan favorite—and if you’ve ever had one, you probably understand why.
Visitors to the chain are welcomed with delicious, fresh-baked rolls, served warm with a honey cinnamon butter. While the sweetness of this combination can be a little jarring for those not expecting it, most people are convinced of the rolls’ tastiness after only a few bites—and accidentally end up filling their stomachs with bread before their meal arrives.
The rolls have become so popular that the chain now sells a frozen version that one can take home.
This popularity means that some people now travel to the restaurant specifically for the rolls. One customer recently brought some rolls home—but when she looked inside the bag, she was met with a surprise.
What’s Going On With These Texas Roadhouse Bread Rolls?
In a video with almost 10,000 views, TikTok user Naomi Gibson (@ngibson24) shares a peculiar item she recently purchased at the popular chain restaurant.
“Just got home from Texas Roadhouse, and I got takeout rolls,” she starts.
Visible on the table, resting on a piece of tissue paper, is a single roll. The roll appears to be a standard Texas Roadhouse roll.
“This is a normal roll,” she says, holding up the roll. She then holds up a second roll: “This is one of the rolls we got.”
This roll has been formed in a way where it appears croissant-like. It’s elongated, with the dough wrapped around itself to create a layered, apparently French-inspired look.
“Someone unlocked their inner pastry chef,” Gibson laughs. In the caption, she adds, “Please up this employee’s pay. Their dream is to be a pastry chef.”
Does Texas Roadhouse Make Its Own Rolls?
Seeing this, some may wonder if a Texas Roadhouse would actually have the opportunity to do something like this in the kitchen. Alternatively, they may wonder if the chain bakes its rolls from frozen and this one somehow slipped through the cracks.
According to The Takeout, rolls at Texas Roadhouse are, in fact, made fresh. Food Republic cites a Reddit post from an employee who claims that the rolls “start out as powdered dough mix, yeast, sugar and water that is mixed into a [50-pound] dough ball that we hand roll out into a sheet that is cut into each individual roll.”
“It is a time consuming process that would be so much easier and faster if it was frozen dough,” the alleged employee wrote.
But Why A Croissant?
Given all of this, it’s pretty clear that Texas Roadhouse makes its own rolls. This means that an employee could have formed the dough into a croissant shape, baked it, then sent it out to a diner.
Why they would choose to do that is another question. It’s uncertain, but a possible theory is that there was not enough dough left to make an entire roll, or that they had rolled the dough too thin for a normal roll. Consequently, they decided to form it into a croissant shape in order to save it.
Alternatively, they may have just done this because they were having a little fun in the kitchen. Gibson’s theory is that the worker has a “dream…to be a pastry chef.” It’s possible that they were just living out a slice of that dream while on the clock.
If you want to make your own Texas Roadhouse rolls at home, you can pick up the frozen versions that are for sale in many grocery stores. You can also try making one of the many copycat recipes that populate the internet—which, as expected, pair great with a little honey cinnamon butter.
