Bargain hunting is one of the tried-and-true pastimes in American culture. Usually, there’s a hunt for a product during a seasonal sale or some sort of clearance. Buyers have to sweep in and purchase a clothing item or tchotchke before it’s too late. But what happens when a person stumbles upon a product that’s nearly 90% off, completely by chance?

That’s what Maddi Todd (@padditodd), a TikTok content creator, says she experienced during a Walmart trip. In her video, which has more than 2 million views, the content creator said that she discovered a “hidden clearance” sale at Walmart.

‘I’m Back For The 3rd Time’

Todd said that she thought the price was an accident at first.

“I went back ’cause my sister liked the pants, and she wanted a pair for herself, and I was like, ‘Let me just go check.’ I go back, buy her the pants, and they ring up again as a dollar,” she said.

She went back to the store for a third time to purchase another pair of brown leggings for her other sister. This time, she filmed it.

Todd walked over to the section where she found the pants originally. For a second, she didn’t think Walmart had any pairs left. Then she found one.

“I literally found them. Oh my God, and I found them in my sister’s size,” she said. “Wait, I’m gonna die. All right. See? Nine-ninety-eight. These brown ones keep scanning as $1, so this is gonna be a test to see if these scan as $1 also.”

She scanned the leggings as a test, and they too rang up as $1.

“Beautiful. OK, so I’ve secured yet another pair of brown yoga pants for $1,” she said.

Walmart’s ‘Hidden Clearance’ Items

In the comments section, viewers said that Todd had stumbled upon a little-known fact about Walmart: The store has a “hidden clearance” section. Online, many discussion threads and blog posts discuss Walmart’s “secret” deals, which are posted on platforms such as BrickSeek.

The store apparently puts some items up on clearance without updating any signage in-store. The only way to find out about those deals, then, is to scan items in-person or to look at coupon sites.

“I scan everything on my app to check! There’s so many hidden clearance items,” one commenter said.

Another commenter added, “[Unmarked] clearance is the only reason I go to Walmart!!!”

A third viewer said, “Walmart usually has a ton of hidden clearance!!”

Subplot News reached out to Todd via email and Walmart via contact form for comment. We will update this story if they respond.
