Man orders McDonald’s Monopoly Quarter Pounder—and notices something crucial missing. People think it’s suspicious: ‘The winning pieces are locked up’

‘It’s still rigged.’

A man says he ordered a McDonald’s Bacon Quarter Pounder, expecting one sticker to come with it—a Monopoly game piece. But when he got his meal, he noticed the current promotion wasn’t stuck on the box.

In a video that received more than 415,000 views, Josh B. (@iwasjustsaiyan) says he had to ask a McDonald’s manager where his sticker was.

While he doesn’t provide an explanation for where the promotional sticker went, he does show his audience something he presumably received during his visit—a collection of McDonald’s small fry bags with Monopoly stickers on them.

How does the Monopoly game work?

McDonald’s Monopoly game, which is taking place from Oct. 6 to Nov. 1, has gained quick traction on the internet. But how does it actually work?

The Game’s FAQs state, “You can play the Game by obtaining a Game Piece when you purchase an Eligible Menu Item (while supplies last).”

Alternatively, the guide states that customers can mail in to receive at least one game piece, although most people are opting to purchase “Eligible Menu Items” in person.

Once a person acquires a game piece, they can register it in their McDonald’s app. They then may receive a prize such as a free food item or instant points.

Alternatively, they may receive a game piece that’s part of a set. The property combinations, it seems, add up to larger prizes such as a 50,000 cash prize, various Jeep vehicles, or a Carnival Cruise.

Why didn’t his Quarter Pounder have a game piece?

Under normal conditions, a Quarter Pounder with Cheese would award at least one game piece. So why didn’t Josh receive one?

Some viewers had guesses.

“It only comes on the [Quarter] Pounder, not the bacon one and not the double one … That’s why you didn’t have one,” a viewer said.

Indeed, only the Quarter Pounder with Cheese is listed on the site as part of the limited-time Monopoly Menu; the Bacon Quarter Pounder is not there.

How do customers get winning game pieces?

Other commenters took aim at the McDonald’s Monopoly game’s system, arguing that the game is difficult to play as is.

“There’s no way for a person in a single state to win that prize,” one viewer claimed. “You need to get together with people from other states because the missing pieces from every state [are] in another state.”

Another commenter had an even more negative outlook.

“All the winning pieces are locked up at corporate,” they asserted. This is likely in reference to the 1995 to 2000 McDonald’s scandal, “McMillions,” wherein an employee named Jerome P. Jacobson rigged the game for friends and associates.

It’s unclear if either commenter’s claims have merit. Currently, there’s no evidence to conclude that pieces are separated by state. There’s little evidence that there’s a corporate conspiracy to lock up game pieces, either.
