A man says a gas station pastry looked a lot better on the label than it did after the first bite—especially when the inside turned out to have the entirely wrong ingredients.
Jacob (@jacobzeil) says he stopped at Kwik Trip to grab a Monster energy drink and decided to add an “apple pie pocket” to his breakfast order.
The packaging described the pastry as having a “cinnamon sugar tortilla, apple filling, and a classic white drizzle” on top.
But Jacob says what he found inside looked and tasted nothing like what he expected.
Instead of the apple filling advertised on the package, the inside appeared to contain a savory, breakfast-burrito-style filling.
Jacob described it more plainly: “one of their breakfast burritos with [expletive] icing on it.”
Based on what the apple pie pocket is supposed to contain, his comparison is arguably more literal than he initially realized. As of this writing, his video has been viewed than 342,400 times.
What’s in a Kwik Trip apple pie pocket?
The item Jacob bought appears to be Kwik Trip’s apple pie pocket, described on DoorDash as a limited-time menu item containing “sliced apples blended with traditional apple pie flavors wrapped in a warm cinnamon tortilla drizzled with vanilla icing.”
Current Kwik Trip menu listings on Uber Eats describe it that way, too. In other words, the tortilla itself wasn’t the mistake—the filling was.
Nothing in the description of the apple pie pocket online suggests it should contain meat, eggs, or another savory breakfast filling.
Jacob’s video, then, suggests there was a kitchen mix-up. What he showed viewers appears much closer to the filling of a breakfast burrito than a pastry, although the outside still had the icing that comes on the latter.
Without confirmation from Kwik Trip, though, we can’t say definitively that an employee accidentally swapped the filings. But the company’s own menu description establishes what should’ve been inside, and that does not match what Jacob says he found.
Kwik Trip also maintains a nutrition and ingredient database for its prepared foods. The company says its stores prepare and sell products containing major allergens, including wheat, milk, soy, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, and sesame, and notes that stores use shared cooking equipment and preparation areas.
Kwik trip didn’t immediately respond to an inquiry sent via its online contact form.
Did he pick up the wrong item?
Plenty of viewers pointed out that the word “tortilla” was right there on the package.
“Dude, it literally says tortilla on the box,” one commenter noted.
But others thought Jacob’s mystery filling looked less like apple pie and more like something else.
“Some poor guy put salsa on his apple pie this morning,” one person joked.
Another viewer had essentially the same theory from the opposite direction.
“Whoever made breakfast mixed them up, and I bet someone who wanted a breakfast burrito was pissed when they bit into an apple pie,” they wrote.
A couple of people who identified themselves as Kwik Trip workers said that kind of mix-up could happen.
“I worked in a KT kitchen; it’s hell on earth in the morning. Please give the fellow kitchen workers who were probably up all night a little grace,” one former worker wrote.
Another self-described employee offered a more detailed explanation.
“I work at Kwik Trip, and yeah, that happens sometimes with those because the[y] and the normal burritos are cooked the same, often at the same time too. Sometimes they get mixed up ‘cause the kitchens can be stressful, and they look the same on the pans,” they said.
At least one person found the possibility of a kitchen mix-up oddly reassuring.
“Ain’t [gonna] lie. Makes me like them a lil more. Reminds me humans are cooking up in the back,” they added.
