One thing that strikes fear in American consumers is seeing “bioengineered” stamped on food. Because of this, it killed one woman’s appetite for her favorite Dove chocolate and Nutter Butter snacks.
“Well, sad day. Looks like both are ruined,” TikTok creator Christina (@blackroseinthesum) says, referring to her Dove Silky Promises Milk Chocolate and Nutter Butter. “I tried this and it tasted funny.”
What was wrong with the snacks?
When she turns the Dove chocolate bag around and checks the print on the back, it clicks.
“They got hit, too, with bioengineered food crap,” she says. “You could taste it. Tastes waxy. I can tell. I’m a big chocolate snob.”
Subsequently, the content creator reads the Nutter Butter packaging, which also confirms it has the same print.
Bioengineered ingredients explained
In 2016, the National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard started requiring companies to label these products, and it became mandatory nationwide in 2022. The United States Department of Agriculture defines this practice as food genetic material modified through laboratory techniques that couldn’t be done through conventional breeding or found in nature.
According to the FDA, these foods are safe because they undergo the same safety requirements. Typically, a certain amount of traceable bioengineered ingredients in products must have this label printed. To meet this threshold, the item has to contain more than 5% bioengineered ingredients, which the USDA lists on its website.
Since sugarbeet/sugarcane and soy are on the list, it’s likely why Christina’s Dove Milk Chocolate has this label. Because sugar is the second ingredient on the label, this is possibly why her chocolate had a waxy flavor. In addition to sugar, corn and soybean could be reasons for the Nutter Butter label.
‘Not the Dove chocolate’
Christina’s video amassed over 814,000 views, and many collectively mourned the loss of their favorite chocolate.
“No dove was the only chocolate that tasted like chocolate anymore,” one viewer commented.
“Not the dove chocolate,” another echoed.
A third even had the same reaction. “Yesss. I just bought Dove and threw them all out,” they shared.
Meanwhile, others shared their alternatives to avoid this.
“I’m a chocolate snob too. Lindt is still good. Hersheys and nestle are garbage,” one commenter stated.
“I would like a moment to introduce you to Tony’s chocolate. Real chocolate ethically sourced,” a second suggested.
“Yall gotta start trying out the Aldi’s German chocolate. It’s much better, well, at least before they start doing the same,” a third recommended.
