Purchasing an expensive, new piece of furniture is a commitment. For that reason, many consumers want their pieces to last as long as possible. But one woman wasn’t able to get a full service life from a product purchased from Ashley Furniture.
A content creator who goes by the name Living On Legacy (@livingonlegacy) posted a video that received more than 1.6 million views. In it, she explained how washing the cushion covers for a relatively new Ashley Furniture couch ended up ruining them.
Viewers, however, told the content creator that she should’ve read the fine print and spot-cleaned the couch.
What happened with this Ashley Furniture Couch?
Living On Legacy posted a video directed at Ashley Furniture.
“ This video is for Ashley Furniture. If you’re not Ashley Furniture, feel free to stick around or keep scrolling,” she said. “I was influenced to buy the Rawcliffe sectional because it’s huge, and it’s comfy, and it’s washable.”
The Rawcliffe 3-Piece Sectional normally retails for $2,899.99 on Ashley Furniture’s website, although the sectional is sometimes on sale. According to Furniturepick, an alternative retailer that also offers a couch from the Rawcliffe collection, its cushions are not machine washable.
“The manufacturer recommends ‘Spot clean with upholstery shampoo, foam from a mild detergent. Do not saturate area. Do not machine wash,’” a representative from Furniturepick says.
Despite this, the TikToker was under the impression that the couch’s cushions were machine washable. So when she tossed each of the cushions inside a washing machine, they ended up getting ruined.
“Today is the first time that I went to wash all of the pillowcase covers and the couch cushion covers, and holy cow, like, I have so much regret right now,” she said.
She then panned across her home, which had various piles of fluff that presumably came from the couch cushion covers.
The content creator asked whether the purchase was even worth it: “I… Is this how they get you to just buy an entirely new couch and keep spending money with them?”
Commenters Ask Questions
In the comments section, multiple viewers asked the content creator why she washed all of her Ashley Furniture cushion covers at the same time. Some presumed that she washed them one by one, as the cushions themselves were large. Others told her she should’ve started with just one cushion.
“After 1 cushion, why did you continue with ALL the remaining cushions?” one commenter said.
Another commented, “I mean…. Common sense would have said stop at pillow one.”
Viewers also confirmed that the couch’s cushions are not supposed to be washed.
“[The Rawcliffe sectional] is not supposed to be washable. it’s spot clean only,” a viewer added.
Other viewers, however, did call out Ashley Furniture for its Rawcliffe Sectional’s design.
“[Unfortunately], the Rawcliffe is one of their oldest designs still in production, they’ve been making it for going on 10 years now without updating it,” a viewer added. “[All] the sectionals from the past few years have liners now, to avoid this very problem. I work at Ashley’s, and I always tell people this is the only design that does not have liners. Customers need to know before buying this sectional!”
Viewers suggested that customers buy the Omaha by Ashley Furniture instead to avoid any complications with machine washing. They claimed it is one of many models by Ashley Furniture that includes washable cushions. They also recommended reading on Ashley Furniture’s website to understand the differences between the furniture brand’s available products.
